New ‘case by case' occupational health service helps businesses manage long-term absence
A new and inexpensive ‘case-by-case' occupational health service for employers is now available from Lorica. The service is particularly relevant for employers that don't use a contracted occupational health scheme but need to understand, budget and plan around employee absence, as and when it occurs.
The telephone service enables a company to work with a dedicated specialist to manage the practical and financial impact of the absence, while also supporting the employee's wellbeing. It provides guidance and realistic recommendations in a quick and focused assessment of the absence.
Two versions of the service are available; Review and Assessment for £190 and Case Management at £450 for more complex situations. The service can also offer advice on the impact of the new ‘Fit Note'.
Studies indicate that, at current rates, UK plc is facing absence costs of at least £692 per employee every year. Within a small business, the impact of a single absence can be far greater, especially if the employee is a key manager or director. The launch of the service coincides with a study from Mind, the mental health charity, which found that almost 20 percent of people claimed they were ill because they could not cope with pressure in the office, according to a Daily Telegraph report.
Louise Flowers, head of claims management and business services, Lorica Consulting, explains, "Employee absence can be a costly and difficult situation to manage for any organisation, let alone a smaller business, in terms of sick pay, lost productivity and added pressure on colleagues. While most absences are resolved quickly, there are some occasions when it causes concern.
"The reality is that these cases can be difficult, time consuming and can feel like working in the dark, especially without a good understanding of the medical condition. It can be extremely difficult for an employer to know how to budget or manage the situation. This system helps a company to get a practical recommendation within a few working days."
